2. Define s , p and d molecular orbitals by using the five d atomic orbitals. (20 pots)
3. A molecule has the symmetry of C3v. (20 pts)
(a). What are the symmetry operations the molecule has?
(b). Write down the multiplication table for these operations.
(c). Arrange these operations into classes by similarity transformations.
(d). Construct the character table and name each irreducible representations.
(e). Place x, y, z , Rx, Ry and Rz into suitable positions.
4. Provide plausible reason for the difference in IR wavenumbers between the following two compounds: Mo(PF3)3(CO)3, 2040, 1991 cm-1 and Mo(PMe3)3(CO)3, 1945, 1851 cm-1. (20 pts)
5. In each of the following pairs of transition states which you would expect to be more intense and why? (20 pts)

d. The most intense d-d band in [CoCl4]2- or the most intense band in [MnCl4]2-
